BL2 had a lot more 'epic' set pieces whereas the Pre Sequel feels dry until the game finally opens up a bit. The story is pretty bland in the first half of the game but picks up pace later and turns out to be pretty great. I was really worried when the game was first revealed that the story and humor would fall flat considering the lead writer had changed and the Pre-Sequel was being developed by 2k Australia. The grinder really helps reduce some of the RNG of Borderlands and I felt a lot more satisfied with the loot than in previous borderlands games. You can stick two legendary weapons inside along with a purple gun of your choice, and you will then get a legendary of that gun type. Secondly, there's a new 'Grinder' that allows you to put up to three weapons you don't want inside to create a new, higher ranked weapon. Firstly, my friends and I have found legendary weapons in ammo, gun, and health machines far more than we did in BL2. Legendary weapons drop just as often, but there's two exceptions to BL2 that make them more frequent. The Grinder and loot in general has been kicked up a notch from BL2. In the Pre-sequel characters have a lot more to offer each other and keeping track of when Athena has her shield up, where Saint might be, or if Claptrap is handing out a high five is actually important. Otherwise, you were just individuals put together on a team. In BL2, only Maya provided some minor support in the way of a medicore self heal and the ability to immediately grant second wind. Claptrap can boost everyone's fire rate and reload speed while handing out 'high fives' for healing and damage increases for both parties, and Wilhelm's Wolf drone can paint a target for teammates to fire at for increased damage while Saint tops off everyone's shields on occasion. With the exception of Nisha, every character has team specific buffs that really make them a valuable contributor.Īthena can taunt enemies with her shield up, providing a wall to stand behind as her healing aura tops off your health. PS also does a great job of providing skill trees that not only shine in multiplayer but can also support a team in co-op play. The fact that characters in the Pre-Sequel actually interact with the environment and have conversations to quest givers and themselves already give them a lot more personality.

I think the skill trees in this game really don't get enough credit. These guns deal reduced damage but once something is frozen, you do vastly more damage to it anyway. Cryo behaves exactly as you would suspect: you can freeze an enemy in place assuming the element has affected them enough. There's a lot of variety in lasers and they can all vary in elemental damage type. Even though Laser is treated as 'one type' of gun, they can actually act as shotguns, a sustained beam, a sniper rifle, or an automatic. Other than the gravity slam and low oxygen there are two new weapon types: cryo and laser.

I realize some people might enjoy a duck and cover system, but I personally think Borderlands always tried to be faster paced than that, and The Pre-sequel really stepped this up a notch. Being able to Gravity Slam in low gravity is a fun added feature that also encourages you to stay in motion as opposed to BL2's duck and cover gameplay. Enemies attempt to flank you and get in your face, so if you are standing in place on the ground in a low gravity environment for more than ten seconds you'll find yourself quickly overwhelmed. With the low gravity of the Pre-Sequel you are constantly in motion. In BL2 you would shoot enemies until shields ran dry, duck into cover for a bit, and then pop back out to fight again. The gameplay is similar to BL2 with a couple of twists. It's worth a buy if you've played Borderlands before, but I would buy BL2 first if you were new anyway since the story wouldn't make any sense otherwise. The glaring weakness of the game is a mediocre first half that suffers from some poor map design. I finished the game playing with two other friends on the PC and am halfway through the game single-player. I'd mostly like to highlight my experience with the Pre-Sequel and talk about some stuff I haven't really seen in reviews, I assume most of us know the basics of the Pre-Sequel from other reviews like the new characters involved and the general story.
